Mobility Scooter Accessories To Consider For Your Mobile Scooter

After choosing your mobility scooter, paying for it, and learning how use your new machine what else should you think about? Mobility scooter accessories. Just like a car emergency kit, you should keep consider certain accessories that will help you in specific situations.

When choosing a scooter, consider one that either has a basket or at least has a spot to hang one on. Baskets are useful for shopping, garage sales, or even carrying personal items. Dragging a bag full of groceries all the way to the car or home can be difficult or painful. A basket makes the trip easier and has the added benefit of making the actual shopping easier. Like the mobility chairs at grocery stores, a basket in your scooter means you do not have to hold a bag while shopping.

For longer trips remember to bring a portable battery charger for your scooter. These scooters run off of batteries that need to be charged regularly. If your battery runs out in the middle of nowhere, it may be difficult or impossible to get somewhere to ask someone to help you charge the scooter or call someone to pick it up. Packing a charger for longer trips and being sure that your battery is charged before every trip will help keep you from finding yourself in this potentially dangerous situation. Portable battery chargers are one of the most important mobility scooter accessories to have on hand.

Consider using headlights, tail lights, and a horn on your mobility chair for your safety and the safety of those around you in stores. The headlights and tail lights are useful if you are out at night or during other low visibility times with your scooter. The tail lights can also signal someone in a store that you are backing, slowing down, or stopping so they can avoid you easily. The horn can let someone know you are coming or get someone's attention if you are stuck for any reason. When buying mobility scooter accessories, be sure to keep these on your list.

Since many of the people who use scooters have some type of disability, many also use a cane or walker. Be sure that your mobility chair comes with a holder for your walker or cane. This will prevent it either from falling out or dragging on the ground. Sometimes you want to get up and move around and bringing your cane or walker makes that possible.

Be sure to invest in a canopy to protect your scooter from the elements. If you wander off with your cane or walker or store your mobility chair outside, cover it in case of rain, blowing dust, snow, sun damage, or other small debris or precipitation. Even if your insurance and/or Medicare cover the cost of the scooter, it would be expensive and inconvenient to replace. Protect that investment with a canopy along with the other mobility scooter accessories we have discussed.

These and other mobility scooter accessories are a few of the things that can make using your mobility scooter easier, keep it in good shape longer, and keep you safer while using it. Even something as simple as a grocery basket may be the difference between a stiff shoulder for days or a pleasant afternoon of shopping.
